Common Grace

Tonight’s Big Idea: “All good things come from God and God alone!”
Matthew 5:45 ESV
so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
Acts 14:16–17 ESV
In past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways. Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.”
James 1:16–17 ESV
Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
John 3:27 ESV
John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven.
1 Timothy 4:4 ESV
For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
God is the ultimate source of every good thing!
God blesses both Christians and non-Christians
God uses all people to bless one another with good things
Two imprtant things to remember about God’s good gifts:
God’s material blessings in this life, are not enough to save you.
Luke 16:19 ESV
“There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.
Luke 16:20 ESV
And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,
Luke 16:21 ESV
who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores.
Luke 16:22 ESV
The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried,
Luke 16:23 ESV
and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side.
Luke 16:24 ESV
And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’
Luke 16:25 ESV
But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish.
Luke 16:26 ESV
And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’
Luke 16:27 ESV
And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house—
Luke 16:28 ESV
for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’
Luke 16:29 ESV
But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’
Luke 16:30 ESV
And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’
Luke 16:31 ESV
He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’ ”
The health, wealth, and prosperity we enjoy in this life are good things, but they have no bearing on our life in the next.
Luke 12:15 ESV
And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
Luke 12:16 ESV
And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully,
Luke 12:17 ESV
and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’
Luke 12:18 ESV
And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
Luke 12:19 ESV
And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” ’
Luke 12:20 ESV
But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’
Luke 12:21 ESV
So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
“Are all my treasures on earth, or have I layed up treasure in heaven?”
2) God does not owe us love or salvation, but he has given us both!
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Wages vs. Free Gift
Wages are deserved, gifts are undeserved!
